Even though I've got auto hints turned off, MM will regularly dim the screen and give a blinking sign pointing to the hint button. Don't want hints, don't need hints. The only way to get out is to CTL-ALT-DEL and restart the game. Really a kludgy way to work.
For the -gtk2 distribution, the necessary DLLs are included in the zip file (which is why it's so large).
