Hands off is one of the most trusted applications and alternative to Little Snitch when it comes to network privacy. It is also an all-rounder application that gives protection both as the network firewall and application-specific firewall. It controls both inbound and outbound traffic of an application.

I use it to lockdown network traffic before my VPN kicks in, and to throttle anything data hungry when I'm tethering. Step 2 – On the Security & Privacy window, click on the ‘Firewall‘ tab. Trojan horses - i.e. programs transmitting unconsciously data stored on your computer - can be detected by Little Snitch and prevented on the transmission of data. The firewall is invisible and always active. You don't have to keep any windows open. By default, Little Snitch uses Silent Mode—Allow Connections, which behaves just like Apple's built-in firewall does, which is to say that it assumes any application on your Mac that is properly signed is allowed to send and receive data at will. It also tracks every connection, while allowing all network traffic to freely enter and exit your Mac, so you can look at those connections and decide whether or not you want to make that connection in the future. This mode is the best choice for most users. DLP (see ... for a definition) goes beyond what Little Snitch does and does packet inspection to ensure that credit card numbers (for example) are never sent out from your network / box. Ideally, you can add regular expressions to define other PII that shouldn't be allowed to be sent out (your name, address, etc;). They're nice-looking, but don't have anything that even remotely resembles rules. All it can do is deny or allow all traffic, on per-application basis. If you want your email client to talk to only your email server but not anywhere else (as a security precaution) you'll have to use built-in Windows firewall facilities to set up such a rule. I don't. They're not targeting me. If you don't know that an area of water bordered by land on three sides has comments on their pages, you're not very well versed in the Internet.
