Fights I Can’t Believe We’re Still Fighting…
Everybody has a cause. This much is true. Nearly everybody has some thing that they care more about than other people do. If you’re lucky, the thing you care about is also cared about by a sh*tton of other people and you can mobilize and march on cities and get things changed. Overcome and all that jazz.
The thing is, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Lemonade WAS a popular drink. And you know what? It still is. See what I did there? Sure you can add strawberries and peaches, but it’s still lemonade, my n*gga.
Knowledge, my people. Use it or lose it.
Anyway, given the events of this past week and the fact that perverts is apparently a culture…
Let me stop there. So much like many other people, I’ve been keeping up with the Zimmerman trial and Rachel Jeantel, Trayvon’s friend [PJ EDIT: 242pm EST], who happened to be the last person to speak to him alive which is a jarring ass feeling. I’ve been there. But you know she was on the stand and between her telling the defense lawyer that she can hear wet grass, her hitting the lawyer with knowledge obtained from The First 48, and referencing Perverts as a culture this trial is mad interesting. Let me not clown her. Too badly. I’ve read commentary stating that she’s just culturally different because she’s Haitian and never left her block so the defense is trying to kill her credibility and intelligence.
Can I rap to y’all for a menudo? THAT’S HIS JOB. Shut it up with the her being treated unfair or being made out to be a victim. She has a lot to deal with. This is real. She doesn’t want any of this. And that’s fair. But unfortunately this is her life and his job is to get everything she says tossed RIGHT on out.
Back to the lecture at hand…this week has been interesting. But it really just made me amazed that we’re still fighting some of these damn battles. I realize people have opinions. Some for and some against whatever is happening, but some sh*t just seems still amazes me. Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike…
1. Abortion and women’s rights
Texas recently ended their session in somewhat fantastical fashion. They were set to vote on a bill that would state that abortions were illegal past the 20 week point. Well we all know that Wendy Davis attempted the 13 hour filibuster that would have run out the time, but fell short by 3 hours, but the session was ended anyway with no vote. However, Governor Rick Perry (you remember him) has stated that he intends to call a special session JUST to pass the bill. Here’s the thing, I know people are split on this. But in some ways, I really feel like only women should even be allowed to vote on this. If you think life starts a conception, I can dig it. I just think its not your call to make on somebody else’s body. Period. I also find it hard to believe that women STILL have to fight for the right to do what they want with their bodies. I’m a man. So perhaps I just don’t get it, but #overit. Women are totally people too!
2. Marriage equality
I’m pretty sure I wrote about this I’m just too lazy to go and find it. I actually get somewhat irritated when people take issue with gay people being able to get “married”. Civil Unions are cool, but “marriage” is for straight people. GTFOHWTBS. The section of DOMA that was stricken was long overdue and I’m glad the SCOTUS got that right, but I’m still amazed that this is a thing. Look, people are people. People are different. We all come pre-wired for different sh*t. WHY DOES IT F*CKING MATTER WHAT THE NEXT PERSON DOES? Let folks marry who they want to marry. There are a lot of capital letters in this paragraph. Point is, I just don’t understand why this is still a fight. I mean I get it, I just don’t get it. Twenty years from now we’ll look back and be amazed as Uncle James and Uncle Joe recount the fact that they had to fight for this and our kids will be like really as they Skype their penpal Martian with 8-arms. Maybe not 20 years…by now I was supposed to be living that Jetson’s life and I’m not. But you know what I mean.
3. Voter’s rights
I understand why section 4 of the Voting Rights Act was struck and sent to Congress to legislate. I’m just dumbfounded that states would actually think its not necessary in the first place. To pretend that your state’s history of bigotry and intentional voter suppression despite evidence to the contrary is ridiculous. The South HISTORICALLY has a problem with this. And still does. People are just more legally savvy. And yet, we still have to FIGHT for the right to stand in line to participate in a process that doesn’t really work in most of our favor anyway. But it matters.
4. Affirmative Action
Monday, the SCOTUS acted on the Fisher vs. Texas case which is a case of a young white girl who basically didn’t work hard enough and got lumped in with the rest of the candidates and didn’t get into Texas, got mad, yelled racism and filed a case. Or some organization saw an opportunity and filed a case for her. Forget the details, I’m still mad that “reverse racism” gets to be a thing and/or that people still believe the playing field is level. To quote Chris Rock, if that man is qualified, then give him the job. But if we’re equal, f*ck him. We’re still fighting for racial harmony and the ability to sing kumbaya and sh*t is changing. Look at DC. It used to be chocolate city and now Black folks, still in the majority, seem to be just Black people in a white city. Gentrification is real. While its not all terrible in theory, reality is a different story for displacement purposes. <—Damon wrote on this. Point is, things ain’t perfect even if they are getting “better” but then we get constant reminders. Just watch shows like What Would You Do? when they flip the racial parameters. Post-racial deez.
Anyway, based on the events of this week, those are things I’m still amazed that we have to fight over. But I get it. Causes and sh*t and folks all want their version of America to the be the one we live in. Stop it.
What fights (doesn’t have to be mad serious) are you still amazed that people are fighting over?
Holla at me.
