I also reluctantly downloaded HP's ImageZone software that looked vaguely promising, but turned out not to be. Ironically, the interface on this piece of HP software actually seemed to be decent, even though I didn't really see any purpose to the application. It seemed to look for images in your Pictures folder and then display them in an iPhoto-like fashion, but it didn't seem to have anything to do with scanners.

make[1]: *** [] Error 1 There is a Sept 2017 ICA Scanner Driver v5.8.7 for Image Capture for this scanner on the Epson site. The 2014 Scanner Driver, and Scan Utility v3.4.9.9 may be too old to work with High Sierra. Uncertain if VueScan will work with the 2017 driver. After all the great advice, I discovered that I had to reinstall Leopard and did so. I then reinstalled Vuescan. And then I had this problem where sometimes, Vuescan would start, and other times, it would just hang up. VueScan Pro 9.6.01 provides basic functions of a scanner software and lets you change the scanning parameters like resolution, transparency and the output file. Before the scanning of the image you can preview the original and can crop the part which is of your interest. You can also use one of the presets which are available in the program. You can also adjust the colors of the image before scanning and the program offers the option to change the color balance of the image depending on the light source or the environment of the photo. VueScan Pro 9.6.01 has got a simple and straightforward interface and provides two display modes which are Simple and Advanced. Simple mode is for the average users and Advanced mode is for the ones who are interested in viewing all the options available in the program. The output can be saved as a JPG, TIFF or PDF file. I used the nvram command to turn off the card and tossed all the AMD kexts. The machine runs fine with its motherboard video (in Sierra). I'll have to try the Mojave install and see if all is well. I do have an SSD, not a spinner.
