Smart Drive... If you've ever lost data to a hard drive failure before, you know how much that can suck. If you haven't, then don't get too confident. Hard drives are very prone to failure and most don't survive past three or four years of age. Luckily, nearly two-thirds of of hard drive failures can be detected well before they occur! Smart Drive will give you unprecedented peace of mind when it comes to your hard drive's health. It will invisibly monitor your hard drive's status (using a technology called SMART and based on statistical analyses performed by researchers at Google) and will only bother you when it detects an impending failure. Also, if you're an advanced user and would like to get under the hood, Smart Drive will give you access to the raw SMART data and allow you to assess your hard drive's health yourself. (Note that backups, e.g. using Time Machine, are always a good idea, whether your hard drive seems to be failing or in top shape.)
