My worry is that when Fujitsu has to go to 64-bit, they'll release a new scanner at the same time, making the iX500 an instant orphan. The iX500 is almost a 6-year-old design.
Open System Prefs > Printers & Scanners > + Add Printer or eScan is not recognized, even when I type in the name of the scanner.

However a 32 bit program on a 32 bit OS can only address 2gb of RAM. You've gotta leave some for the OS itself and other services. But chances are even at 2gb unless you're scanning medium format negs in at full resolution tiffs you won't hit that limit. A 4x5 neg. at 4800 dpi would likely tax a smaller system pretty bad.

Now I am still having trouble with Vuescan. Sometimes it opens, and other times, it doesn't. But here's the thing: when it *does* open, it cannot find the scanner!
