Linux MacOS ReST?
You want to pulse guide instead of using the ST4 port. Much more accurate and robust. Bob has the right idea. Get a used windows OS based laptop.

I'm thinking about one of the entry level ZWO Cameras (likely a 178MC) to "dabble" in Lunar and Planetary AP with my TEC 6 f/12 MC. I have a MacBook Pro running Sierra. Although I do have a old PC laptop [Windows 7 Pro] my goal is to use my Mac exclusively. Are there others who are doing this that could share what Mac software combinations you have found to be user friendly, compatible and somewhat simple i.e. not a long, steep learning curve? How comprehensive is the Mac software offered with the ZWO cameras?

Shoestring FCUSB focuser driver,
Some are Windows software, but run OK on Mac OS X. You can turn them into normal double click applications using a utility called WineSkin Winery.
So what do I need to do in order to get guiding on my Mac? I haven't been able to uncover any drivers for the CGEM for OSX and I'm not sure how I'd be connecting that up with PHD2 either. Should I use a Windows VM? I've got a Windows 7 instance installed right now on VirtualBox, but I'm not sure how that would work when you've got USB stuff plugged into the Mac and the drivers installed on Windows. It's just really confusing to me.
AstroGuider controls guiding cameras and mounts. It allows to frame and focus guider scope, calibrate and tweak guiding parameters and to guide the mount over ST4 port of the camera, mount driver or external applications like EQMac. Although it is intended mainly for DSO imaging, it has also lunar/solar mode. Dithering can be controlled from AstroImager and guiding is stopped automatically whenever the mount is moved by AstroTelescope.
Windows, Linux, OSX
"A nice feature of the StarShoot is its simple cable connections. There's an RJ-12 jack on the camera, allowing it to connect directly to the mount with a single, simple cable. The other camera connection is for a USB cable that runs to a two cables are needed to run the auto-guiding system."
