Maintain today has announced the release of Cocktail 11.6 (High Sierra Edition), the latest maintenance update for users running macOS High Sierra 10.13. The update is highly recommended for all users of Cocktail (High Sierra Edition).
Deleting apps from your Mac is as simple as dragging them to the trash. Well, usually. Apps can leave behind support, log, and settings files you won’t ever see if you don’t know where to look—and the space they use adds up over time. AppTrap fixes that by keeping track of the hidden support files you apps make. It runs in the background and when you toss an app into the trash it asks if you want to get rid of its support files, too. If you say yes, it moves all of those extra pieces into the trash for you. The Interface section allows configuring a plethora of preferences. Users can customize the look and features of the Finder and Dock, alter the hidden settings in Safari and Mail, change login preferences. Apart from that, it is possible to access the recent menu items, specify the settings for crashed apps, set the screenshot file format and location. The Cocktail app allows tweaking all necessary interface preferences in a single window.

Some apps that have previously been iPhone only are now making their way to the Mac screen, too. Like the brilliant Voice Memo which is great at recording and saving interviews, meetings and the like. It’s here on the Mac now as well, making it easier to work on your recordings to transcribe them, for instance.
Believe it or not, having a lot of files on the desktop will actually slow down a Mac. The slowdown is less noticeable on the newest and beefiest Macs, but nonetheless it still happens. This is because each file and its icon preview take up RAM and resources, and the less RAM you have the more you’ll notice the sluggishness resulting from a cluttered desktop. The best solution is to get in the habit of filing things off the desktop and into appropriate folders, but if you can’t be bothered to do that than just grab all files and move them into a single directory and deal with it later.
Apparently there is a hidden way to repair permissions. Apple Support Note HT203538 suggests the Terminal command diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`.

I reached out to Apple and didn't hear back, so I went next to the awesome Mac nerds at OWC. Their take on macOS High Sierra was that "some developers have gotten word that Apple prevented High Sierra from being installed on a RAID set" but that "installing on a RAID set is only an issue during the install." So the good news is that, if you have a RAID system, your data isn't lost. Once you have High Sierra installed, you'll be able to access your RAID set again.
Speaking of disk maintenance operations, Cocktail offers wide range of scripts. It can check SMART status of your disks (which stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). It also scans and repairs permissions, which could solve a number of problems with errors in your applications and Mac OS X as well. It also allows you to enable/disable journaling, spin-down times, and Sudden Motion Sensor, which is something that only a few applications offer.
